Tanabata festival or Star Festival 7 July 2011

Versierde_bamboetakken_Tanabata_festivalTanabata is a traditional Japanese celebration based on the ancient folk legend about the love of Orihime (the star Vega) and Kengyuh (the star Altair). In order to prevent the couple from losing themselves in one another, the god of the stars decided that the 7th of July would be the only day they were allowed to meet.

As Tanabata fell close to the time of the Bon Festival, a festival devoted to the souls of the dead, the celebration was associated with some of the practices involved in welcoming and saying goodbye to the spirits of one’s departed ancestor.

Although the modern version of Tanabata varies from one place to another, a common feature of this festival is the display of bamboo branches decorated with long narrow strips of colored paper and other small ornaments and talismans. The paper strips are inscribed with wishes and romantic aspirations.

From the 1st to the 31st of July 2011 the Yamazato Restaurant will be serving a special nine-course Tanabata dinner menu for € 115.00 per person.
